Develop your Self-Assurance

In StrengthsFinder Themes, Talent Development by Rhonda Knight Boyle

Self-Assurance is one of 34 StrengthsFinder talent themes.  Less than 5% of people who take the assessment have Self-Assurance in their Top 5 talent themes. If it’s in your Top 5, here are seven ways to develop your Self-Assurance talent:

1. Claim your Freedom

As someone high in Self-Assurance, you need autonomy and to be free to make your own decisions and go your own way to get things done. Find a role where you have freedom to do things your way (within reason, of course).

Freedom is essential to develop your Self-Assurance talent.

2. Study Entrepreneurship

Because you independent and a self-starter, entrepreneurship might be the best fit for you. Study different avenues of business ownership and discover what interests you. You are at your best when you are making lots of decisions and owning your own business will allow you to do just that.

3. Talk to your Gut

Your gut talks to you, and now it’s time to talk to your gut. How do you know you’re on the right path? Are you feeling something in your gut? Where? What does it feel like? How do you know when you are not certain? How does it feel different? Understanding the physiology of your decision making is essential to your development.

4. Trust your Instinct

You usually make decisions based on what you call “gut instinct.” When you don’t, it usually doesn’t turn out the way you envisioned. When that happens, ask yourself what caused you to go against your gut? What was different and what caused you to abandon your plan and follow someone else’s? Make a mental note of that so that in the future, you can remain true to your instinct.

5. Open Questions

When you’ve made a decision but haven’t acted on it yet, you will likely ask other people for their opinion before you move forward. You’re “testing” whether or not they’re going to give you something else to consider and often your mind is really already made up. Listen to their objections, if any. Take what they share with you into consideration as a different angle that you cannot see.

6. Lead Your Followers

Your confidence attracts those who are not so certain in their own decisions. You bring security in your leadership and those who follow you are counting on your support. Be cognizant of those who are in your “tribe” and know that they are looking to you for direction. Take up their causes. Lead the way.

7. Trigger Words

Certain words may trigger parts of your brain to shut off and your arrogance to turn on. “You should,” “You ought to….,” “You have to …,” could be fighting words that make you battle-ready. Learn the signs of when you’re triggered and what it looks like. You could be missing information because you’ve tuned out.

8. Transparent Partnerships

In your personal relationships and business partnerships, you’ll be looking for people who are secure in their own skin. Transparency is key. Clear boundaries are important. Share with them about your need for independence and autonomy and what that looks like so there are not misconceptions later.
