Develop your Analytical Talent

The Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment identifies natural talent and ability. At last report, 13% of people who take the assessment have Analytical in their Top 5 talent themes. If it’s in your Top 5, here are seven ways to develop your Analytical talent:

1. Choose Your Resources

As someone high in the Analytical talent, you’ll want to have some credible resources that you turn to over and over again. Set up regular delivery of certain magazines, news streams and other bodies of work designed to keep you abreast of any new data around your favorite topics.

2. Hit the Books

Take classes or certification courses that will add to your knowledge base of processing information. Look for things that can speed up your data gathering, or train you to analyze things more deeply.

3. Find a Project

Adopt a pet project or field of study where you can gather and analyze information. Train your brain to identify new patterns that could lead to new perspectives. Find a niche or a cause and lend them your talents. You’ll develop your Analytical talent just by being exposed to new and different types of data.

4. Break it Down

According to the numbers, 93% of people don’t see patterns like you do. They just don’t. And that doesn’t make them stupid, it makes them gifted in other ways. Being able to break down information so they can see it will help you develop skill in explaining data to those who don’t see patterns as easily. Plus, you’ll gain advocates as you teach people what you see.

5. Find Your Buddies

Because of the way your brain works, not everybody understands the patterns you see. But some will. Even though you like your quiet time to process, your brilliance will be invigorated by sharing with someone else who can speak your language.

6. Time Out

Take time out to process. Always make sure you buffer decisions with time on either side of a due date. You need time to think it all the way through, and then think about it afterward — just to be sure.

7. Avoid Analysis Paralysis

You know you get stuck when you don’t have all the data. And sometimes you don’t have enough time to do the research you need to do to have that feeling of completion. So, go ask for it! Telling others what you need can keep you from getting stuck in “analysis paralysis.”
