Develop Your Competition Talent

In StrengthsFinder Themes, Talent Development by Rhonda Knight Boyle

Competition is one of the 34 Clifton StrengthsFinder talent themes. Less than 11% of people who have taken the assessment have Competition in their Top 5 report. Here are 7 ways to develop your Competition talent and turn it into a strength!

1. Study Winners

If you’re high in Competition, you compete to win. Pay attention to winners in all areas of life — from sports to sales to spelling bees. Watching others win when you’re not competing will allow you to see new strategies. Read books and watch YouTube clips by those focused on winning and victory. These will inspire you.

2. Measure and Track

No matter where you are competing, measure and track your progress. If there’s a leaderboard, know who’s on it and what it will take to beat them. If you’re striving to win personal goals, document your daily achievements.

3. Seek Worthy Opponents

Find Pace Partners who will stretch you. A worthy opponent will stimulate your competitive nature and inspire you to winning action. Challenging them will allow you to hone and sharpen your Competition talent.

4. Beat Yourself

Devise your own little competitions and strive to beat yourself. It could be something as simple as drinking an extra ounce of water today more than yesterday, or showering more quickly than you did the day before. You can even time certain tasks you have at work and race through them.

5. Rewind Review

Whether you win or lose, rewind what happened and review it to see what you could have done better. Or what you could have done differently. These mental reviews will prepare you for your next competition.

6. Don’t Keep Score

As much as you want to win, there are some areas of life in which it may not be wise to keep score. Keeping score against your spouse, for example, could cause problems in your relationship. Knowing when NOT to compete can be valuable.

7. Celebrate

When you win, celebrate! Even when you compete against yourself, find rewards. You don’t just compete to compete, you compete to win. And at the end of competition, there’s got to be a prize!
