Develop Your Includer Talent

In StrengthsFinder Themes, Talent Development by Rhonda Knight Boyle

Includer is one of the 34 Clifton StrengthsFinder talent themes. A mere 12% of people who have taken the assessment have Includer in their Top 5 report. Here are 7 ways to develop your Includer talent and turn it into a strength!

1. People Watching

You love people! Find ways to be out and about among them. You’ll enjoy interacting with them and you’ll get a thrill out of getting everyone involved in working together. You’ll also notice anyone sitting on the “outside.”

Being among people will develop your Includer talent.

2. Culture Shift

Get involved with groups that have multiple diversities and backgrounds. You’ll start to notice the openings for cross cultural collaboration so that everyone is connected.

3. Notice the Newbies

Sharpen your eye so you make note of newcomers to the group. Immediately make them welcome and connect them to someone to pave the way. Your best place is on the outskirts where the potential latecomers, outsiders or Nicky Newbies will be hanging. Your genuine philosophy of inclusion will naturally want to bring them into the “fold.”

4. Hang Out

Some people are reluctant to be included, preferring the remain separate until they get a “feel” for where they are. Hang with them for a while and they’ll warm up more quickly. You’re all about pulling the Welcome Wagon wherever it needs to go! Follow their lead until they are comfortable.

5. Info Share

You’re great at making sure others who need to be included in key decisions get their informed. Who needs to know about upcoming events? What opportunities do others needs to be involved in? Speak up at meetings to make sure those not in the room are included in the process.

6. Underdog Advocate

You notice when the underdog is not being heard or included. Become an advocate for key causes when you see those who don’t have a voice. They’re counting on you to speak up for them and make sure they have access to resources. You can make sure their causes are brought forth.

7. Accountability Team

Because you know how others feel when they are excluded, you cannot NOT include others. Unfortunately, this can put you in a position where some take advantage of you. Create an accountability team around you who have permission to make you aware when they see your vulnerabilities. Allow them to be open about what they see and carefully discern what they share with you.
