Consistency: Just and Fair

In StrengthsFinder Themes by Rhonda Knight Boyle

“Man! Have you met that guy in Ground Operations? He is such a rule-follower — he won’t cut us slack in ANYTHING! He gives “by-the-book” a new meaning.”

“A new mandate came out of the Corporate Office. I swear, those policy-wonks come out with new requirements every other day! I can’t even keep up with all of them!”

“That lady is always whining about justice for the workers at that department store! Doesn’t she know that if they get their wages raised, all they’ll do is spend the money on more junk! And besides, there’s no one holding them hostage! If they want to make more money, why don’t they just go get a better job?”

Precision

StrengthsFinder Consistency: they love precision and order

Strengths: Precise and Predictable

Are you frustrated by those people in your life who are sticklers for policies and procedures? Maybe it’s an HR Director who won’t bend a single rule if it means the possibility of setting a new precedent? Or maybe it’s your Mother-in-Law who frets over buying the grandkids gifts that tally equally, right down to the penny? Or it perhaps you’re tired of going to your church or parish where they’ve always got their hands out and the only solutions they know are to throw money at the poor and the marginalized. Don’t they know they’re just going to spend that money on drugs or alcohol?

You may be encountering someone who is strong in the StrengthsFinder talent theme of Consistency.

Consistency: “Even” Playing Field

Fair law.

StrengthsFinder Consistency — they appreciate fair laws.

Those high in Consistency appreciate rules and regulations. They see them as a way to keep things orderly and running smoothly. They like systems, too, that keep things in the “proper” balance. Life should be predictable, and they look for precision and exactness, and pay meticulous attention to detail.

And when things are well-ordered, then things are fair and fairness is something that’s very important to the person with Consistency as a top talent theme. They believe in an “even” playing field — where all people are treated the same. Nepotism, and other “special” treatment may drive them crazy.

Fair Treatment for All

My friend, Marisa is high in Consistency. She’s in management for a local bank and her Consistency shows up in how she deals and interacts with her co-workers. She makes sure her boss keeps the workload even so that no one is overworked. Recently, she had to step in to help another banker on her team clear some loan exceptions because she was overwhelmed with other banking work. She made sure that the excess work got dispersed among other agents so that no single person was overwhelmed.

It’s great managers like Marisa that keep employee morale high!

Love Some Consistency

So the next time someone in your life tries to stick to the rules or play by the book, ask yourself: where do we really need good policies to keep things running smoothly? Where could attention to detail bring more order?
